About Riqui

Richelle "Riqui" Braithwaite is a master loctician and stylist. A
licensed cosmetologist for thirty years, she has always been on
the cutting edge of natural hair styling techniques for African
American women.

"I've always loved the different textures of black hair," she says.
"Natural Black hair is an exciting wide open territory that expands
the ingenuity and creativity of stylists."

As an outgrowth of the "Black and Proud" consciousness era of
the 1960's, Riqui self-published  "Braid Sculpture: The Art of
Combless Hairstyling" in 1982, showing the versatility of braids.

Wearing our hair in natural styles that highlighted our sense of
beauty was not acceptable in many main stream work places at
that time. Through her book Riqui wanted to show braids that
were not only personal artistic statements, but also professionally
acceptable. "
Remember that this was one more right that we
fought for an won
"

Today Riqui is developing new techniques for starting and
maintaining locks.

"Lox are both a personal and fashion statement, showing the
versatility of our hair," Riqui says. "There are untold numbers of
people who would wear their hair locked if the four to six month
starting period could be eliminated and if their relaxed hair didn't
have to be cut off."

As the creative force behind Riqui Lox Systems, a series of
maintenance and styling techniques, Riqui has created
Quick
Lox
, a time sensitive technique guaranteeing locked hair in one
sitting;
Root Locking which permanently locks one's present new
growth; and
Perm Lox, integrating one's relaxed hair with a
textured extensions, creating a distinctive locking process. Styling
techniques such as
Spiral Lox, give the look of lox without the
locking commitment. With
Spicy Lox, Riqui adds curly hair
extensions to the ends of locked hair and with
Reimagined Lox;
Riqui creates styling options including a new cut and/or color.

"These techniques allow people a wider range of styling options
when they choose to wear locks." _Riqui
Riqui also plans to teach her
maintenance techniques to
stylists looking to diversify their
client services.

"We have much to contribute to
cosmetology education. There is
a lot of money to be made in
styling and maintenance of locks,"

"I love inventing new techniques
so I can share with other stylists,
teaching them how to maintain
and style natural hair without
changing its texture"
